There are some possibilities that the domestic helper’s salary will be deducted by the employer:

1. Loss of property caused by negligence

Employers can make deductions based on the value of the items, the maximum deduction for each item is HK$300. During each payment period (usually one month), the deduction amount cannot exceed 25% of the employee’s salary in each period. Nevertheless, employers still retain the right to pursue full compensation.

2. Absenteeism

Employers can also deduct salary, but employers cannot force employees to accept extra days of rest and then deduct their salary.

3. Advance salary

The employer can deduct no more than 25% of the employee’s salary for each period. If the sister asks for a loan, the employer can deduct salary for repayment if the employee agrees in writing.
